Tips for Patients with Disabilities

Taking care of your health is important. If you have a disability, you may need extra support. You also have the right to be heard, respected, and cared for. Learning to speak up for yourself can help you get better care.
Here are simple ways to get more from your health visits:
- Know your needs. Think about what helps you feel safe and comfortable. You may need more time during visits, help with forms, a wheelchair accessible space, or an interpreter.
- Ask questions. If you do not understand something, let the staff know. You can say, “Can you explain that in a simple way?” or “Can you write that down?” It also helps to write down any questions you have before your visit and bring them with you.
- Bring support. A friend, family member, or caregiver can come with you. They can help you remember information and speak up if needed.
- Share your goals. Tell your care team what matters to you. For example, you may want to reduce pain, manage a condition, or improve your mental health.
