Andrea Caceres’ journey at Zufall Health is a great example of how passion, growth, and opportunity can shape a career. Inspired by her older sister, who worked as a medical assistant, Andrea became interested in health care and wanted a role where she could connect with patients one-on-one.

She joined Zufall in November 2021 as a Patient Representative while completing her medical assistant studies. She chose Zufall because she saw it as an organization where she could grow, and soon after completing her externship here, she became a Medical Assistant in August 2022.

Through her work as a Patient Representative and Medical Assistant, Andrea gained a deeper understanding of the challenges many patients face beyond their medical needs. She saw how things like completing paperwork, language barriers, and finding resources could be overwhelming, and she knew she wanted to help more.

As a Case Manager, Andrea finds the most rewarding part of her work is helping patients successfully access benefits and resources and navigate complicated social systems. “I’m helping to open doors they didn’t know existed,” Andrea shared. “It brings me joy to be a part of their story and help relieve some of the stress they’re experiencing.”

Andrea’s passion for helping children and families has also inspired her to continue her studies in pursuit of a degree in social work. With encouragement from her former supervisor, Lesly, Andrea decided to continue her education and pursue a path where she can provide even more support to patients, especially Spanish-speaking families and children.

“I always wanted to work with kids and I can do that through social work,” Andrea said. “Also, there is such a need for Spanish-speaking social workers to serve our communities. When I’m working with a patient who is new to this country and struggling, I think, ‘This person could be my mom.’ I want to be a trusted support for people like her.”

When asked to describe Zufall in one word, Andrea chose ‘compassion.’ “The mission means so much to the staff here and it shows in the way all my coworkers care deeply about our patients’ well-being,” she said.

Her advice to those just starting a career in health care: “Take it one step at a time and don’t be afraid to jump at new opportunities when they come. There is a lot more out there than you may know about initially.”

Outside of work, school, and being a new parent, Andrea enjoys reading and listening to podcasts, especially mysteries and self-help topics. Her journey from Patient Representative to Case Manager is a reflection of her dedication to learning, growing, and helping others, one patient and one opportunity at a time. Thank you, Andrea, for being a safe harbor for our patients!
