Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection that spreads through intimate skin-to-skin contact. It can affect anyone, so we all have a responsibility to prevent it. Long-lasting HPV infection is the main cause of cervical cancer. The virus can also cause throat, anal, and penile cancers.

Increase your chances of prevention and early detection by taking these steps:

• Make time for your annual visit – Yearly check-ups let you talk with your provider about your health, ask questions, and plan the tests and vaccines you may need.
• Get vaccinated – The HPV vaccine helps protect against HPV infections that can cause cancer. It is recommended for kids starting at age 9 and is available for teens and adults up to age 45. When more people get vaccinated, it helps protect the whole community.
• Get tested – A Pap test looks for early changes in the cervix, and an HPV test finds the virus before it can cause cancer. People ages 30–65 who have a cervix and are at average risk should get screened every 3–5 years.
