Keep Your Gums Healthy: Know the Signs of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease. It happens when plaque, a sticky layer of bacteria, builds up between your teeth and gums. If it is not treated, gingivitis can turn into a more serious gum disease that may lead to tooth loss. The good news is that gingivitis can often be prevented and even reversed with good oral care.
Common signs of gingivitis include:
- Swollen or puffy gums
- Bright red or dark red gums, or gums that are darker than usual.
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss
- Tender gums
- Bad breath
If you notice these signs, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Early treatment can help stop the problem before it gets worse.
The best way to prevent gingivitis is to floss every day. Flossing removes plaque and food from between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, visit your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups, eat a healthy diet, and avoid tobacco products to help keep your gums healthy.
A healthy smile starts with healthy gums. Taking a few minutes each day to care for your teeth can help protect your oral health for years to come.
