A Vietnam-era Navy medical corpsman and National Guard trombonist, Charlie went without dental care for more than 40 years because of the cost. Like many veterans, he does not qualify for dental benefits through the VA, which only covers those with a 100% service-connected disability. While on military duty, Charlie received dental X-rays every two to three years, but after his service ended, this essential care became unaffordable.

Earlier this year, Charlie learned about Smile for Our Heroes, Zufall Health’s no-cost dental program for low-income veterans, through a veterans support group in Passaic County. At the time, he was experiencing tooth and jaw pain that made playing the trombone—one of his favorite hobbies—difficult and uncomfortable.

Initially, Charlie was anxious about returning to the dentist. He worried that he might need multiple extractions, as many of his peers now have full dentures. He was quickly put at ease by Zufall’s compassionate dental team, who assured him this would not be the case.

“I feel blessed to be getting this dental care today, and motivated to take care of my health going forward,” Charlie said.

He is now engaged in a comprehensive treatment plan that has already included deep cleanings and a crown, all at no cost!
