An Army veteran who served during the Cold War, Sabrina went 12 years without seeing a dentist. She wasn’t proud of her 10-plus cavities, and friends often told her she wasn’t taking care of herself.

She didn’t have a choice. After a traumatic brain injury ended her civilian career, Sabrina was left with overwhelming medical expenses that forced her to put dental care on hold. Like many veterans, she does not qualify for dental benefits through the VA, which only covers those with a 100% service-connected disability.

Learning about Zufall Health’s Smiles for Our Heroes program—a no-cost dental service for low-income veterans—sounded too good to be true. She had tried similar programs before, calling for help but never receiving a response or the care she needed.

But this time, Sabrina did get care—and more than she expected. Now receiving fillings, deep cleanings, and extractions as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, she says she finally feels hopeful again.

Her Zufall dentist also took the time to teach her proper brushing techniques, especially around the gum line, and explained how dental health impacts overall health, including heart health. Sabrina is deeply grateful for the care and education she has received.
