Zufall Health is proud to announce Douglas Bishop, MD, FAAFP, as the 2025 recipient of the Dr. Robert Zufall Award for Clinical Excellence — our highest honor for a clinician whose character, integrity, and commitment reflect the founding principles of our health center’s mission. 

Established in 2024, the award honors the legacy of Robert Zufall, MD, and his selfless dedication to providing medical care for Dover’s families facing barriers to health care alongside his wife, Kathryn. 

Dr. Bishop embodies that legacy every single day. Since joining Zufall Health in 2010 — his first and only job out of residency — he has lived by a simple mantra: “Do what’s best for the patient.” That philosophy has shaped not just his own practice, but the trajectory of the entire organization. 

Guided by his vision, Zufall Health has expanded its reach in ways once unimaginable. Dr. Bishop championed telehealth during COVID, ensuring patients never lost access to care. He drove the launch of our substance use recovery program, recruiting Dr. Michael Ganon to help patients manage their recovery and long-term health goals. Drawing on his residency experience serving refugee communities, he established Zufall’s Refugee Health Program and two medical-legal partnerships — HEAL and Florecer — that protect the rights and well-being of immigrant families. 

His impact extends beyond our walls. Dr. Bishop has been instrumental in developing clinical training partnerships with Atlantic Health, Rutgers, and St. Elizabeth University’s PA program, strengthening our workforce pipeline while mentoring the next generation of community health providers. A recipient of Rutgers’ Best Clinical Teacher award — chosen by students themselves — and the Lester Z. Lieberman Humanism in Medicine Award, his excellence in teaching matches his excellence in care. 

For his colleagues, Dr. Bishop is a rock — his phone always on, his guidance always available.
